Who is B.J. Palmer?
Bartlett Joshua (B.J) Palmer, was the son of D.D. Palmer – chiropractic’s founder. Much like his father, B.J. was a philosopher, scientist and keen chiropractor who was far ahead of his time.
During the 1900’s, chiropractic was not well recognised or respected via the medical profession, so B.J. had to develop and market chiropractic to the public, which he did so via television and radio stations, owned by the Palmer College of Chiropractic. This is why B.J. is recognised as ‘The Developer’ of chiropractic.

B.J. believed that the cause of all sickness and disease was due to nerve interference or vertebral subluxation and a specific chiropractic adjustment was the only solution.
A vertebral subluxation is where an individual vertebra doesn’t move properly in relationship to its neighbouring joint, which irritates the associated spinal nerve and interferes with the loop of nerve impulses from the brain to the body.
Importantly, D.D. Palmer did not lay claim to having discovered spinal manipulation, but a system of using ‘the spinous and transverse processes as levers to rack misaligned vertebra back into normal position’. This was paramount in separating chiropractors from all the other professions claiming to influence the spine, to this day: chiropractors were specific enough, focused enough and demanded enough physiological and anatomical knowledge in order that they not merely perform a generalised manoeuver called a “manipulation” but a procedure known as an adjustment, in order that only one joint, or joint complex, was affected.
B.J. said, “chiropractic was specific or it was nothing”.

During his life, B.J. married a woman named Mabel Heath, and they both worked as chiropractors and taught at Palmer College of Chiropractic.

Dr. B.J. Palmer launched his colorful career by assuming the responsibility of the Palmer School of Chiropractic in 1906. His contributions included extensive research, improved methods of spinal adjusting and analysis, higher standards for chiropractic education, and increased appreciation for chiropractic worldwide. B.J. battled on many fronts — legal and legislative obstacles to the licensing of chiropractors and financial challenges to the school. He was often the center of controversy, but well before his death in 1961, chiropractic had secured a place among the health sciences.
